A number of factors point to a coming shortage of physicians. Baby boomer physicians will retire, patient populations are aging, and more people have access to care through the Affordable Care Act. The chart below measures the projected physician demand against supply, and how earlier or later retirement ages might affect that. Some argue that the shortfall may encourage older physicians to work longer.
