While clinical trials can tell us what works for the average patient, no patient is average. The N-of-1 model brings an experimental rigor to individual care, and holds promise for many conditions with idiosyncratic responses. The issue also looks at a wave of grief in the wake of COVID-19 and how mental health care systems are preparing to respond. And while medical journals have made progress in dealing with issues of race, a wave of troubling episodes show that there is still much room for improvement.
