A Rich Lineage
Devotees to the worm C. elegans trace their research roots.

Many C. elegans researchers trace their professional pedigrees to Cambridge, England, where in 1964, Sydney Brenner at the Medical Research Council embarked on work with the worm. For example, Guy Caldwell, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Alabama, proudly calls himself a “grandson” of Brenner’s because he performed his postdoctoral work in the lab of Martin Chalfie, who studied directly under Brenner. Another “grandson,” David Hall, went on to become professor of neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and the editor of WormAtlas.
